With new features arriving quickly, it is easy to assume that the newest option is always better. It is not.

Chat is still a strong fit for asking questions, researching a subject, improving writing, comparing options, learning and working through decisions.

Work is not simply a better version of Chat. It solves a different problem: Chat works with you, while ChatGPT Work can take on more of a clearly defined job.

Use Chat while you are choosing destinations, dates, priorities and budget. Work becomes useful once the decisions are clearer and you want the research turned into one finished plan. Use a Project if planning will continue for months.

Create a 10-day holiday plan using the destinations, budget and priorities we have discussed. Compare the main options, suggest an itinerary and highlight anything I still need to decide.

Personal Choose an expensive purchase Start with: Chat

This often stays in Chat. A conversation can uncover what matters before comparing products. Work may help if you have several quotes, specifications or finance documents to analyse.

Help me choose a new laptop. Ask only the questions that will materially affect the recommendation, then compare suitable current options against my actual needs.

Personal Manage a home project Start with: Project

A renovation or move can involve budgets, quotations, measurements and decisions. Keep it together in a Project, use Chat to make choices, and use Work for larger outputs such as a budget tracker or schedule.

I am planning a kitchen renovation. Divide it into sensible stages. Recommend what should stay in Chat, what would benefit from Work and what information I should keep in this Project.

Learning works well through conversation because you can ask questions, request simpler explanations and test your understanding. Use a Project to collect notes and sources. Work can turn them into a structured study guide later.

Teach me [subject] at beginner level. Start by checking what I already know, explain one idea at a time and use short questions to test my understanding before moving on.

Workplace Create a project plan Start with: Chat or Project

If the idea is still developing, use Chat first. Once the desired outcome is clear, Work can create the connected documents. Use a Project when the work will continue across meetings and source files.

Help me turn this idea into a practical project plan. Identify the stages, information needed, likely risks and where Chat or Work would help.

Workplace Turn feedback into actions Start with: Work

Several surveys, meeting notes and reports make this a connected, multi-stage job. Ask Work to find themes, show gaps and turn the evidence into actions. Review the conclusions yourself.

Review these documents and identify the main themes, important issues and recommended actions. Create a summary and action plan. Highlight anything that needs checking and do not invent missing figures.

Workplace Prepare for a meeting Start with: Chat for simple preparation

Chat can write an agenda, questions or talking points. Work adds value if preparation means bringing together information from several documents or connected sources.

Prepare me for this meeting. Review the available information and summarise key updates, decisions needed and questions I should be ready to answer. Flag anything uncertain rather than guessing.

Workplace Create a report from sources Start with: Work

This is one of the clearest Work cases. The information already exists; the job is to analyse it, trace the findings and turn it into a useful finished output.

Create a clear briefing from these documents. Identify the main findings, explain where they came from and highlight any gaps, disagreements or uncertainties.

When the task changes

Already started in Chat?

You may begin by exploring and later realise you need a finished result. In the current ChatGPT desktop app, some conversations include Continue in work mode, which can hand the existing context to Work.

Early in the conversation

The job has changed

“Now use what we agreed to complete the larger job.”

Interface note

ChatGPT changes quickly, so treat menu labels as current guidance rather than a permanent rule.

Keep it simple

When should you stay in Chat?

Stay in Chat when you want a conversation, are still exploring, want to question each step, or the task is already simple enough. A good Chat conversation can be just as valuable as a Work task.

Moving because Work is new

A new feature is not automatically the right feature. Choose based on the task.

Thinking long chats need Work

Length is not the signal. Move when the kind of job changes.

Starting without a plan

For bigger tasks, agree the result and the stages before asking for final outputs.

Forgetting to check the result

Review important information, evidence and decisions before using or sharing the output.

ChatGPT Work does not replace normal Chat. Use Chat when you want to think, explore and work together. Use Work when you have a clear outcome and want help completing several connected steps. Use Projects when the same subject will continue over time.

The best workflow may be Chat → Project → Work → Chat.

And sometimes the best answer is simply: stay in Chat.
