How to Use AI When You Do Not Know Where to Start

Sometimes you do not have a prompt because you do not yet understand the task.

You may have a rough goal, several constraints and no clear first step. This is a good use for AI, but asking it to produce the final answer immediately can lock you into a plan you have not considered.

Use the conversation to shape the job before you ask for the work.

Begin with what you do know

Tell the AI the outcome you want, why it matters and what is fixed.

You may know the audience, deadline or budget even when the method is unclear. You may also know what you do not want.

Rough information is fine as long as you label it honestly.

Ask for questions, not solutions

Try this:

I want to [rough goal], but I am not ready for a solution. Ask me one clear question at a time to understand the outcome, audience, constraints, information available and what a good result would look like. Do not assume missing facts. After the questions, summarise what we have agreed and suggest the smallest useful first step.

One question at a time is easier to answer than a form containing fifteen gaps.

Separate the outcome from the format

People often decide they need a website, presentation or app before defining the problem.

Ask what the finished work must help someone do. The format can follow. A short checklist may solve a problem that first sounded like a new app.

Choose the smallest useful next step

A complete project plan can feel productive while creating more decisions.

Ask for the next step that reduces uncertainty. It may be checking demand, finding the current policy, testing a prompt with one file or sketching a simple page.

After that step, review what changed before planning the rest.

Record the decisions

At the end of the conversation, save a short brief with:

• The intended outcome.
• The main reader or user.
• Confirmed constraints.
• Decisions made.
• Questions still open.
• The next action.

This stops later work from depending on remembering a long chat.

Do not let questions become delay

AI can keep asking if you let it. Once the missing information no longer changes the first step, begin.

The aim is enough clarity to act, not perfect knowledge before anything happens.
