ChatGPT is still the AI tool I would point most people to first. Not because it is perfect, but because it is the easiest one to use for lots of different things without needing to think too hard about where to start.
The thing I like about ChatGPT is that it feels flexible. You can use it for writing, planning, research, image ideas, email drafts, summaries, learning, problem solving and general thinking. It is not locked into one narrow use. That makes it useful for beginners because you can try one task, then slowly find other ways it fits into your day.
Where ChatGPT works best is in the back-and-forth. I rarely get the exact answer I want from the first prompt, but that is not really how I use it. I usually start with a rough request, then push it closer to what I need. I might ask it to make something clearer, less formal, more direct, more practical, or more like something I would actually say. That is where it becomes useful.

For writing, it is very strong as a first-draft helper. I would not publish its first answer without editing, but I would happily use it to get past a blank page. It is good at turning rough notes into something organised. It can also help you compare ideas, create outlines, test headlines and explain topics in plain language.
It is also useful for creative work. You can ask it for image ideas, article structures, website copy, social posts, scripts and prompts. It can help shape an idea before you move into another tool like Canva, Firefly or an image generator.
The downside is that ChatGPT can sound too polished if you let it. That smooth AI tone can creep in quickly. It can also be confidently wrong, especially when you ask about facts, prices, recent changes or anything that needs checking. So I would not treat it as a final source of truth. I would treat it as a very useful assistant that still needs a human reading over its shoulder.
The free plan is good enough for testing, but if you use ChatGPT often, the limits can become noticeable. The paid plans make more sense if it becomes part of your normal week, especially if you use it for files, images, research or regular writing support.

ChatGPT is the best all-round AI assistant for most people. It is not magic, and it still needs checking, but it is the one I would start with if someone asked me, “Which AI tool should I actually try first?”

Who should try it first: beginners, creators, small website owners, students, workers and anyone who wants one AI tool that can do a bit of everything.
What may annoy you: it can sound generic, it can make mistakes, and some of the best features sit behind paid plans.
